Record Year for Internat. Investments in Vienna
The attractiveness of Vienna as a business location continues unabatedly. Following the record results achieved in 2007 the number of international companies establishing business operations in Vienna increased again last year. In 2008, 119 international companies selected Vienna to locate their businesses. A total of EUR 125 million were invested and more than 900 new jobs were created. Every second company establishing business operations in Austria last year decided in favour of Vienna. The increasing interest on the part of investors from Central and Eastern Europe is striking. A total of 29 CEE companies invested in Vienna, continuing the perceptible upward trend of recent years. Russia was the top CEE investor, with nine investment projects, followed by Ukraine (8) and Hungary (5). Switzerland (10) and the USA (9) were also strongly represented in 2008. Germany remained the most important investor in 2008, accounting for a total of 36 investment projects. From a sectoral perspective, the majority of investments (71) were once again initiated by firms in the service sector. The technology-oriented fields of ICT/New media were also strongly represented, accounting for 20 investment projects, followed by eight firms in the field of life sciences setting up business operations in Vienna. A total of 15 out of the 19 companies establishing their headquarters in Austria in 2008 selected Vienna as their business location. The underlying reason for Vienna’s popularity is its strongly pronounced competence in doing business in Eastern Europe and the close ties to the markets of Central and South East Europe. In addition to the geographical proximity to CEE markets, Vienna’s competitive advantages include a closely-knit network of financial institutions, law firms, tax experts and consultants with a pronounced understanding of the languages, culture and business practices in Eastern Europe. The high availability of qualified employees, outstanding health care services, a broad offering of international educational facilities and an excellent quality of life are important factors influencing the decision of international firms to select Austria.
